We lost our beloved friend, colleague and mentor, Hugh Beins on December 2, 2011.
There will never be another lawyer like Hugh who was so smart yet treated every case like it was his only case, treated every client like it was his only one, treated those on the other side of the table with respect, acted with unbending integrity, and entertained everyone around him while doing it. It is not an exaggeration to say that generations of union leaders and lawyers learned from him. He also taught us that positive relationships with those on the other side of the table and the neutrals in the middle of the table were also important to advancing the cause of social justice.
Every client who ever won a case with Hugh (and there were many during his 50 years of service) received the decision with his handwritten scribbling at the top:
"When your cause is just, it shines like a beacon in the night." We believe that Hugh selflessly dedicated his professional life to a just cause, and that his legacy is a shining beacon that will always guide us in our efforts.
If you would like to make a charitable donation in Hugh’s memory, his family has asked that it be made to:
Little Sisters of the Poor, 4200 Harewood Rd., NE, Washington, DC 20017
